October 4
Gennetines
Celtic/French/Appalachian/Quebecoise Traditional

Gennetines takes the stage with its beautiful and innovative blend of traditional sounds. Founded in 2000 by local accordionist and pianist Jeremiah McLane, Gennetines has roots in the traditional music of many cultures. Combining Celtic influences from the British Isles and Brittany, French from the Berry and Auvergne regions, and the North American music of Appalachia and Quebec, the members of this quintet use exquisite arrangements to pull all of these roots together, at times with a daring sense of experimentation that sets them apart and places them solidly at the vanguard of the contemporary folk music scene.

From his home in Sharon, Vermont, Jeremiah has toured the globe, appearing at such festivals as Picolo Spoletto in the U.S., Lunenborg Harbour in Nova Scotia, Carrefour Mondiale de l'Accordeon in Montmagny, Quebec, and St. Chartier in France. He has played on over 50 recordings, with such well-known artists as Jay Ungar and Molly Mason. His most recent solo recording, entitled Hummingbird, has been widely acclaimed by critics and audiences alike.

Singer Aoife O'Donovan, whose voice has been called "warm and inviting" by the Boston Globe, was born into a family from County Cork, Ireland. She sings in Celtic as well as Southern Appalachian styles.

Clarinetist and tin whistle player James Falzone is a musician with interests as current as avant-garde jazz and contemporary classical music, and as historical as the medieval songs of France and Italy. He performs and records frequently throughout the U.S. and has released The Already and the Not Yet, a solo project of his original compositions.

Bassist Corey Dimario is one of Boston's hardest working bassists in the jazz and improvised music scene. He provides a solid foundation for the band with his innovative and rock solid playing.

Rounding out Gennetines is gifted and versatile guitarist Ted Davis, a mainstay at traditional Irish sessions around New England.

David Surette, Sarah Blair, and Keith Murphy
Northern Roots (traditional Quebecoise, Maritime, Irish, Scottish, and New England dance music)

Three of New England's finest traditional folk musicians present an evening of music expressing the range, breadth, and beauty of the Northern dance tune tradition - including guitar, mandolin, bouzouki, and foot percussion on songs derived from the traditions of Quebec and the Maritime Provinces, Ireland and Scotland, and New England! Blair, one of New England's most respected fiddlers, has recorded with pianist Mary Cay Brass and others, and as a member of The Sevens, a Celtic groove band that has appeared nationwide and on NPR's All Things Considered. Murphy is known for his Irish style DADGAD guitar playing, expertise on mandolin and piano, and his French Canadian singing and foot percussion. He plays and has recorded with the bands Nightingale, Wild Asparagus, and Popcorn Behavior, and many others, and has published a book of original tunes. Surette, a top player and arranger of Celtic fingerstyle guitar, is fluent in many other styles and on the mandolin and bouzouki. In addition to two solo CDs, he has recorded with singer Susie Burke and with fiddler Rodney Miller, with whom he performed at the 1999 Smithsonian Festival of American Folklife. In 1994 he received an NEA travel grant to study the traditional music of Brittany, France, and has written a book of Celtic guitar arrangements for Mel Bay Publications.
